Creating the Objective Statement |
|
When you want to create a resume that is effective, one of the hardest parts is creating the objective statements. This article shows you some of the options at your disposal and some strategies that can be used. What is the Objective Statement? After you list your name and address in a resume, you get to an area where normally people use the heading professional objective, career goals, objectives or resume capsule. In most cases the objective statement will have 2-3 lines, summarizing the job you’re trying to get and how you are qualified for it. Some people will put it in a sentence and others will use descriptive phrases. Why Should You Use an Objective Statement? Resumes are improved by objective statements by allowing you to: summarize and emphasize your qualifications for the recruiter let the recruiter know what career goals you have and what job you’re looking for. Use it according to the audience. If you want a better shot at getting the job, try modifying the objective statement according to the position you’re trying to get and to the company you’re applying to. One example is using the job name that the company uses. You can also use the name of the company in the statement. When possible match your own qualifications to those required by the company. If you don’t know what the recruiter is searching for, do some research, to have a bit of an edge. What to ask When you modify your objective statement, ask yourself these questions, to make sure it’s as good as possible. Questions to ask about yourself: In what areas are you most qualified (skills, strengths and area of expertise)? What position are you looking for? What goals do you have professionally? What kind of work setting or organization are you looking for? Questions to ask about the organization: What qualifications does the recruiter need from you? What jobs are available to you? What company goals are interesting to you? In most cases people make mistakes when they create their objective statements by being too vague or talking in general when they talk about their qualifications and the position they want to get. Make sure that your statement specifies exactly what job you want, what qualifications you have and in which areas. The objective statement needs to be as specific as possible. Read the job ad and use keywords from it in your objective statement. Use the words in such a way that they fit your own strength and what the recruiter expects. |
